THE style and substance of a carrier bag is vital. There’s no point strolling down the Malls in your best bib and tucker, if you are going to be let down by a pale, dreary bag at your side. Accessorisation begins at the tillpoint – and to decide which retailer leads the way in bag couture, we tested many of the happy sacks on offer.
Here are my Top Ten Carriers from The Trafford Centre. You might disagree, or have special examples of your own – I’d love to hear your thoughts.
So in the style of some latter day Jimmy Saville, here we go pop-pickers, with the Toppermost Tennermost Brill Bags. or something…
At 10) We have
this bijoux pastel pink number from the kooky queen of The King’s Road, Vivienne Westwood. Our Viv is known for her outlandish style, employing in her catwalk collections everything from Highland flingery to Edwardian pomp. How lovely then for her store at The Trafford Centre to offer this understated, lady-like little satchelette, in a modest blush with foil lettering. Dainty.

the subtle Calvin Klein bag, with glossy black lettering on charcoal background. This is sleek, sexy, with a hint of S&M in it’s leather handles. I like this bag as it catches the light with a certain flair, and carries much more than you might think, a bit like a TARDIS were the TARDIS fashionable.

DKNY Jeans carrier. This is glossy, with a stunning monochrome image of the famous New York skyline overlaid with yellow wording. This bag is eye-catching and glamorous, and has really high production values, rather like New York itself. The handle is black cotton, and hand-friendly. A very suitable receptacle for some gorgeous DKNY denim, and sturdy too.

Fossil Christmas special carrier. Made of unlaminated paper, this enormous carrier is printed in a beautiful pale green, with JOY writ large across the front and back. It has a lovely fresh-feeling design to it, and spreads a little festive cheer wherever you wander – what more could we ask at this time of year?

, a stunning equine transportation solution from Levi’s. ‘What has Levi’s got to do with horses?’ came the cry from our judging panel, and the nearest we could guess was the cowboy connection. But suffice it to say, the beautiful beast reprinted on both sides of this generously proportioned bag is a real eye-grabber out on the malls, and deliciously different to any other bag out there. The horse on the right side of the bag is facing right, and the horse on the left is facing left – so if you spin the bag quickly it looks like an indecisive horse unsure of which way to go. Do we have too much time on our hands, we wonder?
